Martha and I began our journey in nosework about a year ago when she was 9 months old. We had taken puppy class and puppy travels (twice), but I didn’t feel like she was ready to advance to the next level of her obedience training. I was looking for something where we could continue to work together, build on our bond and have a little fun.
Both Martha and I have gained more than I could have ever imagined from this experience. What I think is truly special about nosework is it flips the working relationship with your dog. Instead of Martha always looking to me for direction, I was looking to her to tell me where the hide was. I feel like this has built a deeper trust and understanding between the two of us that will make us a more successful team no matter what we undertake.
Both through class as well as the shows we have attended, Nosework has helped Martha to be confident so she is not always looking to me for direction. it has also continued to placed her in situations with people and dogs and it has helped her to become more patient and relaxed in these environments which will help as we move through more advanced obedience training. Martha truly enjoys nose work so even practicing at home is a great outlet for her energy and ensuring she is fulfilled both mentally and physically. This is especially helpful when the weather is uncooperative.
Not only have Martha and I enjoyed every part of this experience, Martha has excelled. We began competing in Scent Work in April 2025. To date she has completed her all around Novice Scent Work title as well as her Advanced Container and Advanced Interior Scent Work titles.
