THE HEALING POWER OF A DOG

This 2-day seminar will prepare the OWNER to be a therapy dog handler in various therapy settings. This is NOT a seminar to train the dog to pass a therapy evaluation. This IS a seminar to teach handlers about the different types of therapy and how to be professional in therapy sessions. Topics covered will include:

  • The difference between Animal Assisted Activities (AAA) and Animal Assisted Therapies (AAT) and the benefits of each
  • Identification of nationally recognized groups who evaluate therapy dogs
  • An explanation of the skills evaluated in therapy dog training
  • HIPAA training to ensure compliance with the federal law concerning health privacy rights
  • Preparing your dog for visiting
  • Being your dog's advocate during a visit
  • How to chose a facility to visit
  • Handler skills for dealing with the person being visited
  • Useful skills for dogs in therapy visiting
  • Preparing yourself for a visit
  • The parts of a visit
  • How to present yourself professionally during visits
  • Trouble-shooting problems

THE POWER OF THE CLICK

This is a 2-day seminar in which the basics of clicker training (operant conditioning) are explained, demonstrated, and practiced.

Learn how to use markers and positive reinforcement techniques to teach your dog how to:

  • Behave appropriately around people and other dogs
  • Improve competition skills
  • Overcome fears
  • Come when called
  • Walk nicely beside you
  • Retrieve any item
  • Do tricks
  • and many other skills

Time will be provided for hands-on practice during the day. Topics covered will include:

  • Explanation of the theory, history, and uses of Operant Conditioning
  • How NOT to use a clicker
  • Choosing the best treat (Reinforcement)
  • Playing the Clicker Game
  • Using a partner to train
  • Teaching the Indicator
  • When and how to put a cue on the behavior
  • Designing practice sessions and keeping track of progress
  • Improving trainer skills and techniques (speed, dexterity, accuracy)
  • Refining and perfecting dog’s skills (aka shaping behaviors)
  • Rate and frequency of rewards (consistent, intermittent, or variable)
  • Use of ‘jackpots’ to reward exceptional performance
  • Fading the use of rewards
  • Teaching complex skills/chaining more than one behavior

First Aid for Dogs

Produced using materials provided by the American Red Cross, this special seminar includes hands-on experience with dogs.  Course materials include a reference book and DVD.

Successful completion of the course will be sufficient to pass the Dog Scout First Aid badge.

Anyone wanting to earn the Dog Scout First Aid badge should bring their dog to the course or make prior arrangements to have the dog demonstrate the procedures successfully.
